Yo, Double Axel, Dudes, I've Got Your Record
Potsdam , NY. 15,000 people. Wes Craven lives here.
Almost 40 years ago, on February 14, 1973, two bands of friends assemble in Bronen's Studios in Potsdam, NY, to record an album. The friends, divided into two bands, Double Axel and Badmouth, have decided to record a double band album - one band per side - on this cold and blustery day. The guys are all in their twenties, all college kids, Clarkson College, SUNY Potsdam, Adirondack Community College, and all crazy about miusic. One of the founders of Badmouth, Fred Serfis, has already written a musical, in college, 'Cycles' and will one day be in another band, Flying Wedge with Rob Zolner's brother, Brian. And write another musical, 'The Grail.'
But, Rob's band, Double Axel, is the real deal. Their music evolved from Potsdam's own Paul Lee and & The Walkers. With the addition of Rob Zolner, PL&TW became Double Axel. Today, Double Axel is still going strong. They call themselvces "Northern New York's Favorite Party Band For The Last 35 Years."
But, back in the day, Double Axel made a record and I have a copy. The liner notes credit 'Mal & Wally' with production and enthusiasm from Robert Frost - yes, THAT Robert Frost.
And the music rocks. I especially like the opening cut on Double Axel's side, 'Taylor's Song.' And there is a nice guitar solo 'I'm In Love.' But the overall feel is what gets me. Its so great.
Badmouth - what happened to you? I know Fred did all right. What about the rest of you? Check in, guys, and let us know how you're doing.
