Lynn Zelensky, Museum Director, on Bob Dylan

I love it when art and music overlap, really when anything overlaps: art, music, architecture, food, science, etc. That is the space where things get interesting. In the overlapping space between one thing and another.
I am an architect, who is interested in art and music. I love the complex overlaps and interweaves among these things. Sometimes I layer in food as well. You are a (fill in the blank)interested in music - you must be or you wouldn't be here! These kinds of collisions are at the heart of creativity. For some reason music inspires you, maybe even gives you a good idea every once in a while that might have some relevance to what you do, your 'day job.' These overlaps might lead to an idea, and this idea might help solve a problem or produce a new product and this is what we call creativity. When this solution or product is truly new, this is what we call innovation.
It all happens in these overlaps.
So, I was delighted to receive this 'Inside the Museum' message from Carnegie Museum of Art Director Lynn Zelensky, in which she overlaps art and music, Bob Dylan music no less:
"Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial." - Bob Dylan, Visions of Johanna, 1966
"In1986, when I first went to work at a museum (MoMA in New York), my husband gaveme a desk plaque inscribed with this quotation by Bob Dylan, and it has sat onevery museum desk I’ve occupied since. Each time I see it, it reminds me thatmuseums are an arena where ideas about history, culture, and social life are inplay. Dylan continually admonishes me to question the role of the art museumand my responsibilities within it."
Thanks, Lynn.
