Tragically Hip in Pittsburgh



My friend Bill - a Buffalo, NY, native and thus almost Canadian - invited me to hear The Tragically Hip live at the Byham Theater last week. So, thank you, Bill, for the belated birthday present! It was a great show. Part of the enjoyment of hearing 'The Hip' (as they are affectionately known) live is experiencing throngs of their devoted fans in person. They travel. In hockey 'sweaters.' And drink Canadian beer. Because The Hip are a Canadian band.

But, The Tragically Hip are not just ANY Canadian band. They are THE Canadian band, and their music is compelling. If I had listened more closely to some of their old albums before the show, I might have recognized more of the songs and understood the lyrics better - like EVERYONE else at the show who sang along to EVERYTHING, word for word. Because the lyrics are where its at with The Hip. Gordon Downie's lyrics are funny and sad and witty and clever and memorable often, and on record you can hear them well. Their records are uneven, but the best of them - I'll let a Hip fan tell you which these are - are great.


If you like Molson, you'll like The Hip.


Now, if he'd only lose that silly hanky fetish of his...
