I Like Vanilla Fudge or The Perks of Working In a Record Store

The other day, I was rifling through the dollar bins - yes, they still exist! - at my local music store. With a few gems in hand including a near-mint copy of Jethro Tull's 'Living in the Past' - a double album set with book and pictures bound into the sleeve and all for a buck - I approached the cashier, who was sifting through new arrivals of records. I asked whether I could have a look, and he said, sure. Nothing much there - except for a nice clean copy of Vanilla Fudge's 1969 first album - the one that went gold that includes slowed down covers of the Beatles' 'Ticket to Ride' and Curtis Mayfield's 'People Get Ready' and Argent's 'She's Not There.' Very slow, VERY psychedelic. For some reason, one of my favorites, but you have to be in the right mood....

The record store guy noticed me looking at the record, and asked whether I knew it. Yes, I said. One of my favorites. Very slow, but great, if you're in the right mood. Oh, he said, I'll have to check it out - and he put it behind the counter. One of the perks of working in a record store, he told me.

A few days later, another stop into the store on my way back from lunch and another quick trip through the dollar bins. There it was: Vanilla Fudge. back in the dollar bin.

I guess he didn't dig it. Too slow? I didn't have the nerve to ask him. Have to be in the right mood....

But, I like Vanilla Fudge.
