Record of the Week #2: Richie Havens On Stage

Last week was crazy and I needed some laid back sounds. Not sure if Richie fit the bill entirely - not exactly easy listening music, his - but he did provide a series of intimate and intense late night listening sessions that I enjoyed.

I have been thinking about Richie Havens recently because of the upcoming Woodstock Anniversary. He opened the festival and his spontaneous ten minute interpretation of 'Freedom' was one of the highlights. You can see it on YouTube:

Although 'Freedom' is not included here, there are many other beautiful moments on this record. He is stellar Dylan interpreter - there is a website devoted to Dylan covers that has a huge section on Havens: dylancoveralbums.com/cguides/havens.html

Here is the tracklist:

01. From the Prison

02. Younger Men Get Older

03. Old Friends

04. God Bless the Child

05. The Dolphins

06. Nobody Knows

07. My Sweet Lord

08. No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed

09. Tupelo Honey

10. Just Like a Woman

11. Teach Your Children

12. Minstrel from Gaul

13. High Flyin' Bird

14. San Francisco Bay Blues

15. Where Have All the Flowers Gone

16. Rocky Raccoon

Throughout the week I revisited these sides, first attracted to the Dylan cover, then the Van Morrison, then George Harrison, then Graham Nash. The only mistep is Rocky Raccoon - what a silly lyric! But over four sides, a great experience.

Next week: Jonathan Edwards
