Coldplay Concert Review (and other firsts)

It was a perfectly beautiful summer evening to sit on the lawn for Coldplay Saturday night. My kids' first lawn concert - each with their best friend - and we had a ball!
The show opened dramatically, behind a theatrical scrim, shadowy musicians, larger than life gradually revealed. And it got better from there! They put on a great show. A crowd pleaser. Lots of anthemic rock to sing along to. Great lighting and specials like cannons full of paper butterfly confetti and huge yellow balloons. Great musicianship - Chris Martin, the Raggedy Andy doll lead singer and songwriter, even played snippets of Satie. I enjoyed it, but also felt somewhat disconnected from it. Did I feel...old? While most of the audience was part of the experience, I was a bit distant from it, appreciative, but, well...how long would it take us to drive home?
Actually the whole experience was fantastic, and the encores were stirring. Great beginning, great ending. A Neil Diamond/Monkees cover on the lawn in the middle! What's not to like!!! The Pavilion has become a great place to see a show. I will definitely be back. A huge improvement over the last time 15 years ago, when it took us longer to get out the parking lot than to watch the show!
Coming into work this morning to share my experience with my co-workers, Mark and Bryan, I felt connected with life's continuum somehow. My kids' first concert. After I stopped talking about the concert, Mark talked about how his infant son took his first steps this weekend - wow, a truly momentous first - and then Bryan talked about his even more emotional weekend - moving his grandmother's belongings out of the house which she sold. too much for her, and her husband in hospice...sad. She is moving to Chicago to live with her daughter.
Beginnings and endings.
