Reading Robert Christgau

Just a quick note on Robert Christgau: read him. I grew up reading his weekly 'Pazz and Jop Consumer Guide' in the Village Voice, but had never read his more extended writing until I came across this collection last year. I have read it A FEW TIMES (!) ever since. I love it. Its like comfort food, or peanuts and every time I start it again, I get different things from it....like a great novel, or great journalism, which it is. Timeless, yet it captures a moment in time, or rather a period of time, and connects the feeling of the era with the music in a way that feels real. No academic analysis, no BS. He is/was a fan of the music and gives it to us straight. Who is real and who sold out. Who met his expectations as a fan and who let him down. Who really writes great songs and who writes crap...
