"Does This Song Match My Sofa?" Announcing SPRINGBOARD Custom Music

This is a picture of Jessica and Billy Goldberg as pictured in the New York Times on October 30, 2008 in an article by Kate Murphy entitled "Does This Song Match My Sofa?" Jessica hired a company to help her find "music to match the apartment she and her husband, Billy, a doctor, had recently renovated." Sound silly? Maybe. But the premise of this service is pretty interesting. As Murphy writes,
"Music can alter a space as much as lighting, fabrics and artwork, but until recently most people relied on their own judgment when it came to sound. Now, though, an increasing number are hiring personal music stylists to pick out tunes for their homes just as you might hire an interior decorator to select furnishings."
I could do that. In fact, I'd love to do that for people. Ok, announcing the launch of a new SPRINGBOARD Design service: SPRINGBOARD Custom Music. Send me a message if you would be interested in having me consult and send this on to friends who might be interested as well.
I'm serious. If the colors and furnishings and spaces matter, why not the sounds? And if folks are unsure about decorating their homes, they may be just as unsure about filling their homes with music. As Joe Wagner, a commercial real estate developer says in the the New York Times , "When someone walks in and hears great music, it's like looking at a wonderful painting on the wall that gives you certain emotions." He gets his playlists updated quarterly.
Daniel Levitan, the author of a great book called "This is Your Brain on Music," (Dutton, 2006) said that "background music can not only change the way people see their environment, it can profoundly affect their mood. Pleasurable music leads to the release of 'feel-good hormones' like dopamine."
Of course, a major part of the pleasure of listening to music for me, at least, is discovering the music myself, or having a friend turn me on to something different that they think I will like. It's personal. It's a gift. But, on the other hand, consulting with an expert doesn't have to take the pleasure out doing something. I read books, magazines, go online, and talk to the experts at the record stores. In a way its a way of elevating your game. So, maybe a service like this is perfect for you!
So think about the music you are playing and how it relates to your home. And if you need a little help, give me a holler!
