Lost and Found

School days. Winter. Every year, another scarf left at school, another glove misplaced, another visit to the Lost and Found.

Lost and found also: my prized GE "Wildcat" portable stereo. Wedged into the bookcase next to my bed, it was the focus of my life from late December, 1970, when I was 11, and for many seasons thereafter. That Christmas, I received the "Wildcat" along with two records: Simon and Garfunkel's "Bookends" and "Led Zeppelin II." Long lost records....

I haven't thought about the "Wildcat" for years, but I found it recently at:  http://www.collectorsquest.com/
One just like mine...

January, 1970. Turning twelve. Almost certainly the year I first discovered the Record Store; although really, at this point, it was the Record Department in the old Alexander's Department Store on Lexington and 59th Street. I was lost for good....

'“A record store is a place where I go to get lost and then found again" says singer Matt White. "It’s like my therapy," he continues on the National Record Store Day Website.

I don't know who Matt White is, but I couldn't agree more. "Whenever I need to find inspiration for my music, I go to my favorite record store called Bleecker Street Records, which was around the corner from my first apartment in NYC. I just walk around aimlessly looking at album covers of my heroes. It’s the only place where I can still buy the old classics as well as discovering the new ones. ”

These days, living in Pittsburgh, I get lost - and found again - at Jerry's Records and The Attic (in Millvale). Check out Jerry's auction at  http://www.jerrysrecords.com/.
